Defense Background

UTRON, an award-winning R&D corporation founded in 1989, is headquartered in Manassas, Virginia.

Its 269-acre gun research and firing range center is located in West Virginia.  This modern facility, previously built by a major defense contractor, is now owned by the UTRON Group and is unique, both in its capabilities and its private ownership.  This facility provides UTRON with a capacity to develop and test its guns at its own all-weather facility rather than contracting for “range time” at government-owned firing ranges as UTRON previously did at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

UTRON has designed and built one-of-a-kind 45mm and 155mm combustion light-gas guns. Support facilities and capabilities include two machine shops, a high-energy/voltage pulse power facility, high-powered optical microscopes, a scanning electron microscope with EDS capability, an x-ray diffraction machine, high-speed digital data acquisition systems, and a design and analysis group.

UTRON’s substantial infrastructure supports high-energy, high-velocity gun-launch research. The high-velocity launch technologies which UTRON personnel have researched and, in some cases, exclusively developed include Combustion Light-gas Guns (CLGG), Electric Light-gas Guns (ELGG), Ram Accelerators, Electro Thermal Guns, Electro Thermal Combustion/Ignition Guns, Solid Propellant Guns, and Rail Guns. As a result of this work, industry experts considered UTRON personnel authorities at gun-launching masses to high velocities exceeding seven kilometers/sec.

UTRON is committed to maintain its strong involvement in hyper-velocity launcher research. Practical hyper-velocity gun launch technologies, such as the CLGG, are demonstrating breakthrough performance in gun technology with applications in the theater missile defense, air defense, long-range cannons, reconnaissance, anti-ship missile defense, and naval surface fire support arenas.

Its West Virginia Research Center has also been designated by the US government as an authorized facility for testing Improvised Explosive Devices (I.E.D.’s). Testing of protective body and vehicle armor is also conducted at UTRON’s facility.
